<image:caption>Nadia Bongo and Lindsay Benedict have been exploring authority in relationships through spatial possessiveness. They created exercises that play with imposing a gaze, using a voice and commanding the body. One of their main questions was "Who is able to tell someone else's story?” The dynamic is between two people but they denied the limitations of dualism and pushed into more complex patterns of exchange. By questioning what is watched, they present their bodies on stage and challenge the desire to look. Everything in culture is learned, including physical movements like common everyday gestures. For this reason, the dance is performed by untrained bodies, people without a technical dance background, in an effort to see the cultural traces that are carried and performed in bodies and language. They improvise movements to show the impossibility of natural gesture. However, through our intellectual struggle to understand constructed desire, in overseen/unseen in Territory, the body remains a source of pleasure.</image:caption>

      <image:title>performance - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>In “What I do without you (Swimming Exercises)” the public was invited to come to an area of Lake Como to do water aerobic exercises together. I used the concept of repetitive physical gestures, like basic exercises, as a strategy to allow everyone to share a simple activity in a common space that could permit a social interaction. The reason for creating the project was to allow me, as a foreigner, to intermingle with Italian people and local regulations. The research forced me to be in uncomfortable, vulnerable positions quite often. Instead of being in control and self-sufficient, I often needed to ask people for help, get very lost, and culturally misstep, all on my way to creating the artwork. I like to orchestrate awkward and messy interactions in order to break or fracture the rigid and emotionally distancing social constructs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Seulle ★ was a structural project that I created for myself in order to get over a break-up. Every Friday morning for a month, I would go to the sound studios of Le Confort Moderne and record myself in-real-time singing while playing a used Roland D-20 from the 1980s. Without preparation for the sound sessions and without any training in singing or playing a synthesizer, I used this process as an exercise to be present with myself. And, without the constraints of technique, these exercises became a safe-place for me to be vulnerable and fumble towards something to hold. Combined with the permanence of live recording, my hidden interiority was forced to the surface. The recordings would also capture the state of my voice on different mornings after staying up late. Seulle ★’s first album, “fall-followings”, was a place for awkward scrawlings and longings. https://vimeo.com/39311402 Performance includes guest players: synth-♥-duo MaTér and synth-exorciser Riccardo Giacconi.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A documentation project filmed for 28 days in Turin, Italy, where the artist took her Basal Body Temperature (waking temperature) every morning and used the reading to designate which of her daily quotidian tasks she would record and film that day. Structuralist in nature, for 30 seconds everyday she filmed her morning rituals with her Super 8 camera in one hand and the intention to do the task with the other. This limitation (doing tasks with one hand) highlights the fact that the artist is alone making this film (and a baby) and pushes her to perform the tasks one-handed. Basal body temperature (BBT) is one’s morning body temperature; it stays stable for men and changes for women. Charting this temperature is a way for women to determine ovulation. A woman’s waking temperature will vary between 35.4o and 36.8o degrees Celsius, depending on the individual. https://youtu.be/khn1FiMDzro 36.8o C – put the blinds up 36.7o C – leave the apartment 36.6o C – put shoes on 36.5o C – hot beverage, drinking 36.4o C – hot beverage, making 36.3o C – breakfast, eating 36.2o C – breakfast, making 36.1o C – get dressed 36.0o C – do hair 35.9o C – put in contacts 35.8o C – shower 35.7o C – pee 35.6o C – wash face 35.5o C – brush teeth 35.4o C – drink water</image:caption>

Playing with the boundaries between hostility & closeness and performance & documentation, the film was shot unrehearsed and with unknown consequences. The interaction was shot on 16mm film in an effort to fix the shared connection on archival medium. The original should be projected with amplified sound. https://vimeo.com/101462095</image:caption>

<image:caption>A film essay performed and filmed by the artist, in which letters of the phrase “Roughing Up the Lips” are spelled out in short vignettes around her Bushwick apartment. She has used this medium and structure as an exercise to intimately explore the home as if it is her own body. The creation of each letter is made with the tools and objects found around the house. The work is a careful deliberation of self-communication within physical spaces and mental spaces. She imagines it as a measured exploration of female sexuality as navigated through her quiet (loud!) domestic space. “Not knowing much about my own body and what gives it pleasure, I used this filming process as a play-space, a parallel investigation.” There is ritualized devotion to the attention of seemingly meaningless tasks all around her apartment. There is an urgency of relation between the camera operator and subject. https://vimeo.com/22406960</image:caption>
