Baby, I just wanna dance / Chéri, je veux juste danser !
Performance, 2011
Le Confort Moderne, Poitiers, FRANCE
1 hour

I put an open-call to the local public for “3-minute long dances” to be performed without auditions in the parking lot of the Le Confort Moderne using a boom box for music.

Baby, I just wanna dance was a process of research. As a foreign artist living in a small town in Poitiers, France with limited French language skills, I created a structure to meet and communicate with the people in my local community. And, in an attempt to fuse my Brooklyn street-style culture with an unknown French culture, I invited the public to celebrate the summertime in the same way that I grew up doing: choreographing dances with friends on a steamy public pavement. Also, I wanted to open the platform at this exclusive cultural institution to bodies that were untrained but enthusiastic, in a way, demanding that play, pleasure, and messy imperfection has value.
