public instruction (not FCC approved)
Radio transmission performance, 12 minutes
Eden’s Expressway, NYC
2018

A research exercise in authority:

With audience members giving orders to the all male-identified performers through FM radio transmission, an unknown performance unfolded in real-time.

The performers listened to the silent instructions through their headphones and performed to their best ability the directions given by each audience member. Each performer then decided individually in what manner they would like to carry out these instructions. The directions were sent silently by fm radio transmission to the pocket radios of every performer. The spectators were told to come to the performance prepared with some direct, complex and difficult orders and each had an opportunity to lead the male performers live during this event.

My interest as someone who uses performance to research social relations and probe cultural constructions, was to witness each individual’s unique (and constructed) responses to the given instructions.
