Vecchio Merda Danzband concert, 2014
Centrale Fies, Dro, ITALY
60 minutes
VECCHIO MERDA DANZBAND is an all-female artist collective that formed in Turin when the four core members Lindsay Benedict (US), Lia Cecchin (IT), Daniella Isamit Morales (VN) and Lisa Perrucci (IT) all met regularly and speaking in three different languages –Italian, Spanish and English. Through the struggle to communicate, surprises, mistakes and magic were made. While all the band members had disparate ideas for VMDB projects and differing levels of technical expertise, they all shared one thing in common: a broken heart.
We were commissioned by Centrale Fies to perform a traditional-style concert. We created melancholic songs, instructional dance steps and purposeless karaoke. This perilous structure is coupled with our determination to explore the emotionally disruptive actions of love that forces a slowing down of industrial time. Typically, our works fight to amplify relationships towards deeper intimacies and stimulate renegotiations of attachments.
Love, being the Danzband’s main theme, can be a real modifier of ideology and an a/effective way of stimulating political movement. A broken heart can slow down productivity in a capitalist system. For this reason, I see value in instability, crises, and resistance.
